The pandemic’s persistence boosted 2021 supplements growth beyond early projections. We now estimate 7.4% growth for supplements in 2021, bringing the market to just short of $60 billion. That’s a big swing from what we forecast last summer, in that period between the optimism upswing brought by the vaccines and the gut-punch reality of the Delta variant, when we projected 5.3% growth for supplement sales.

The story behind all these numbers is how the up-and-down of lockdowns affected sales channels. Sports nutrition provides a telling example. With gyms closed and consumers trying to avoid any additional exposure by stopping at a supplement-focused store, 2020 held sports nutrition to 6.6% growth. In 2021, growth climbed back to 9.2%, the best the category has seen since 2013.

E-commerce now accounts for 16.7% of all sales and is on track to be the biggest channel in supplements in 2024. That growing footprint impacts every other channel in supplements, especially mass market and practitioner.

The impact off all these changes will last long after COVID, showing us again how a pandemic we once believed might last weeks will impact supplements for years to come. Our most in-depth issue of the year tells this story in 42 pages with 17 unique market & survey data charts.
