Culture is accepting the role of nutrition in mental health and there a presumably more stressors today than ever before. Yet, with all of that, sales of mood and mental health products declined in 2022, with sales projected at near flat for 2023. The world was on high stress during the pandemic, which helped boost the mood/mental health category sales to 29.4% growth in 2020.

So what's next? We believe there is room for the mood and mental health supplement markets to grow.

Dietary supplements, or at least natural compounds, have a lot to offer. It’s far from decided whether psilocybin and other psychedelic ingredients have a place in the supplement industry, but they most definitely have a place in psychiatry (see “Tune in, turn on and then what?” page 6). Most of the gut/brain axis is still left to be explored, but there could be more potential for good there than pharma is ever going to tease out of serotonin uptake inhibitors (see “The gut-brain axis comes of age,” page 26). The headlines are decidedly negative about pharma and mood disorders, but we’ve seen several reports in the last year about how important eating right is for mood.
